Cannabidiol (CBD) is everywhere these days. Easy-to-use CBD products are very popular among those who choose to partake in this natural wellness compound. Enjoyed sublingually, natural CBD oil is dropped under the tongue for absorption. At Medterra we make our tinctures using two major ingredients: high-quality, hemp-derived CBD isolate, and something called MCT oil.
Why MCT oil? Keep reading to find out…
WHAT IS MCT OIL?
MCT oil stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride oil. Medium Chain Triglycerides are a type of saturated fatty acid. The use of this ingredient in natural products (including health and wellness supplements) has gone up over the years. This is because Medium Chain Triglycerides are easy to digest and easy for the body to process. Unlike many other fatty acids, MCT’s are metabolised quickly by the liver, not stored as body fat.
Many people choose to use MCT oils in their health and wellness routines. Adding MCT oil to one’s diet is actually pretty convenient: it can be easily blended into smoothies, salad dressings, and more. Some people enjoy putting MCT oil and/or ghee into their coffee to make what’s called bulletproof coffee! Since MCT oil is colourless and flavourless, most people don’t even notice it.
MCT oil’s immense popularity is backed by some pretty impressive health benefits. MCT oil is pro-metabolic, anti-bacterial, and pro-thyroid. When ranchers tried to fatten up their cattle with MCT-rich coconut oil back in the 1940s, they failed — it wasn’t until these ranchers switched to using less metabolically active soybean and cottonseed oils that their cattle began gaining appreciable weight. MCT oil has a similar effect in humans, increasing thermogenesis (i.e, burning off calories as heat) and lowering one’s body weight set point. Some researchers believe that MCT oil may even be anti-ageing.
Even with MCT oil, however, quality is of the essence. At Medterra we use organic MCT oil derived from coconut oil in all our CBD tinctures.
BUT WHY USE MCT OIL WITH CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a fat-soluble compound, which means that it’s most effective when coupled with fatty acids. MCT oil acts as a “carrier oil” for the CBD, allowing a larger concentration of CBD to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The carrier oil also keeps CBD from being degraded by the digestive system.
The ability of any compound to make it through ingestion and digestion is also known as its “bioavailability”. Bioavailability is a term chemists use to refer to the degree to which something is absorbed into the body’s circulatory system. Naturally, one would want their CBD to have the highest absorption rate possible…by choosing to use a quality carrier oil like MCT oil, we’re ensuring you get exactly that. When you order from Medterra, you’re getting the best of the best!
Medterra’s tinctures, capsules, and creams have been recognised the world over for their high quality and affordability. We strive to keep their ingredients safe and simple so our products are easy to use and easy to trust.
